"... Is he awake?"

"I don't know."

"Well is he?"

"I said I don't know!"

"Oh let me at him!"

Heavy footsteps that signified a large man made my conciousness come around, but I didn't open my eyes until cold water splashed over my face.

"See? I told you he was awake!" The large man laughed, crouching beside me. "Hi there. Ya' know where ya' are?"

I lifted my head, looking around. Something registered in the back of my mind and I mumbled out the word. "A room..."

"That's good." The man said, patting my damp hair. "Now, I'm Dr. Hewitt. And that girl is Tricia. Now, I'm gonna let Tricia handle you. I need to wake up a couple other experiments." And with that, the man who was apparently Dr. Hewitt walked away.

I sat up tentatively, sniffing. I suddenly noticed a young woman, maybe around 22, standing in front of me with a towel.

She had a fair smile and a kind face, and was holding a towel out. "Hello! You must be cold, come on, get up."

I gathered my strength and attempted to stand up, finally accomplishing the simple task.

The young woman put the towel around my shoulders and gently dried my face. "Now, my name is Tricia. You can call me Tricia, also. I'm Dr. Hewitt's daughter."

I looked up and jumped abruptly at an image in front of me. "That's a... mirror?"

Tricia nodded. "Seems as if Dr. Hewitt has gotten pretty good at increasing cognitive ability on his experiments. Now, let me tell you a bit about yourself." Tricia stepped in front of me, gently poking something on the top of my head. "You're a little child that has cat DNA infused with yours. You have little cat ears and a tail. You have many of the natural cat instincts. Why don't you try moving your ears or something?"

I hesitated before searching my body for an ear to move. My nerves finally found what Tricia was talking about, and I gently swiveled one of the small ears.

"There you go!" Tricia said, holding out her hand. "Come on, let me take you back to my house so you can get some dry clothes."

I gently took Tricia's hand, still flicking my ears back and forth.

"Little kitty, this is the other experiment I care for." Tricia said, gesturing to the taller girl in front of me. "Dr. Hewitt named her Koira."

The girl, Koira, smiled at me and flicked her tail. She appeared to be half-dog. "Hi there little one! Oh, I wonder what Dr. Hewitt is going to name you!"

I stepped behind Tricia shyly.

"Don't overwhelm him, Koira." Tricia warned, gently patting my hair. "Dr. Hewitt usually names them within a couple days, don't get antsy."

"But he took a week to name me!" Koira complained, flopping on the couch.

Tricia looked down at me, a warm smile on her face. "Go on, find somewhere to sit."

I tentatively sat on the couch cushion farthest away from Koira.

Tricia sat between us. "Now, let's give some introductions. Koira?"

Koira looked over to me. "Oh, right. Okay, my name is Koira Hund. I'm aged twelve. I'm a girl."

Tricia gently pulled me closer to her, playfully rubbing my hair. "We can call him Kitty until Dr. Hewitt names him. He's aged ten. And obviously, he's a boy."

I chanced a small smile.

"Now, I think it's time for-" Tricia was interrupted by the telephone ringing rather loudly. "Okay, okay, coming, coming." Tricia muttered to the phone as she got up and walked quickly over to it, picking it up. "Hello Dr. Hewitt. Mn?" Tricia looked at me abruptly. "Oh yes, he's doing just fine, and he doesn't seem to dislike Koira any. Oh. I see. Hm. Let me think. I could let Kitty- yes I'm calling him Kitty, Dr. Hewitt... Yes. Mnhm. Yes. I understand sir." Tricia sighed. "I could let Experiment 34 sleep with me tonight, if you really need the new one off your hands... Yes sir. I understand... Yes. Goodbye, Dr. Hewitt sir." Tricia hung up the phone, sighing loudly.

"Let me guess!!" Koira exclaimed, laying out across the couch. "Another one?"

Tricia nodded. "And Kitty's only been with me for a couple hours. The other caretakers must be filled." She looked at me with a warm smile. "It'll be fine, Dr. Hewitt will be over here with the new experiment and your name, too!"

I felt a small flicker of excitement at the thought of having a name like Koira.

I was woke up from my small nap by a loud bang and a hearty laugh. I recognized the voice of the man who had woken me up with the water this morning, Dr. Hewitt.

His voice wasn't gentle this time, and I picked up a small Scottish lilt underlying in his voice when he started talking to Tricia. "Tricia my girl! Here's the little one I brought ya'-"

"I'm not little!"'

I raised my head from my pillow, my ear swiveling towards the living room.

"Ya' see, he's a bit fiesty."

"I do see." Tricia replied. "What's his name?"

"I do believe we're namin' him Zorro." Dr. Hewitt replied, giving another laugh. "Zorro Refur."

"Oh I love that name!" Tricia exclaimed.

Dr. Hewitt chuckled. "Amanda spent all night thinking of it, and then Kavallerie got sick and she called me and said that he was too much to handle. I hope you can handle him!"

"I'm pretty sure I can." Tricia replied. "... And what about Kit- Experiment 34?"

"Ah yes, the little cat. One of the few I named myself! Get the little one in here."

By the time Tricia had called for me, I had already trotted into the living room, sitting down beside an unusually quiet Koira.

Dr. Hewitt leaned down and looked me in the eye. "You have a name now. It's Kedi. Kedi Gatto."

I paused for a moment, letting the words sink into my mind. I then quietly repeated them. "Kedi Gatto..."

Dr. Hewitt ruffled my hair and stood upright. "Well then Tricia, I'll leave you to the three! Have fun with Zorro!" Dr. Hewitt slipped out the door and we all stood/sat there for a moment before Tricia make a small happy squeal.

"Kedi! I like it so much!"

Koira laughed a bit, patting my hair. "Now we don't have to call him Kitty all the time."
Tricia looked at Zorro. "You look sad."

Zorro scoffed. "Sad? Why would I be happy?" Said with a flick of his fluffed red tail.

"... Point taken. But you're here now! With a family type system that can take care of you!" Tricia said, a wide smile on her face.

Zorro sighed and rolled his eyes.
